About Unlock PDF
Typing a password every time you open your own document gets old fast, and protected PDFs often can't be merged, edited or compressed. Unlocking saves a copy without the password so you can work with it freely.
Enter the password once and the file is decrypted in your browser with qpdf. PDFs that open without a password but block printing or copying can be unlocked with an empty password field.
Tips for best results
- Only unlock documents you own or are allowed to modify.
- After unlocking, you can merge, split, compress or edit the PDF with any tool here.
- Want to protect it again later? Use Protect PDF with a new password.
How your file stays on your device
Unlock PDF runs entirely inside your web browser. When you choose a file, your browser reads it into memory on your own device, a background Web Worker does the processing, and the result is handed straight back to you as a download. There is no upload step, no server that receives your document and no copy kept anywhere — close the tab and it is gone. That makes it safe for contracts, IDs, medical letters and anything else you would rather not send to a stranger's server. How in-browser processing works
FAQ
Unlock PDF: frequently asked questions
Can you unlock a PDF if I don't know the password?
No. This tool removes a password you already know. We don't crack or bypass passwords.
My PDF opens without a password but can't be printed. Can I fix it?
Yes — such files only have an owner password. Leave the password box empty and click Unlock.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Decryption happens entirely inside your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device, and nothing is stored after you close the tab.
